The Trigg County boys’ soccer team started fast and held on from there, winning 3-2 against the visiting Lyon County Lyons. The Wildcats, ranked 9th in the YourSportsEdge.com 2nd Region rankings, claimed their second win of the season against the 5th ranked Lyons, after winning 4-2 earlier this season in Eddyville.
Freshman Will Jolly got the Wildcats on top early on off an assist from junior defender Derek Frazier. Sophomore Elijah Gaines and junior Daniel Martin scored in quick succession off assists from senior midfielder Javier Llarena and sophomore midfielder Cristian Llarena, giving Trigg a 3-0 lead midway through the first half. Lyon would get back into it through sophomore Bryson Penn, the state’s leading goal scorer, as he would convert on a free kick and then a penalty kick to cut the deficit to one goal at the halftime break.
The second half would be back and forth, including a missed penalty kick by the Wildcats, but neither team would find a goal. The Wildcats managed 8 shots on goal and sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Smith made 3 saves to get the win.
Trigg County returns to action Tuesday when Paducah Tilghman (4-7-2) visits the Recreation Complex. The Lyons host the Mayfield Cardinals (2-8-1) on Tuesday, after winning 5-2 last week in Mayfield.
