The ending was not the way Hopkinsville’s Caitlyn Shelton would have scripted it. The Lady Tiger senior missed a chance to qualify for the state golf tournament on a technicality and saw her high school career end Tuesday at the Region Two Golf Tournament at the Henderson Country Club.
Shelton shot a 91, which would have placed her into a four-way playoff to determine the final two spots. Somehow, the scorecard was added incorrectly by a tournament official, and Shelton signed for a 92 instead. Because it didn’t lower her score, she was not disqualified but had to accept the 92. It would prove costly, and Shelton was denied a chance to return to the state tournament.
Henderson County’s Payton Carter won the region title with a score of 74 – one shot better than Madisonville’s Shelby Darnall.
Christian County was led by Hannah Sumner’s 96. Bridget Owens shot a 99, followed by Jennalyn Kelly (105) and Jenna Humphries (114).
University Heights Academy seventh grader Rheagan Lindsey got off to a slow start, that included a 15 on the third hole. She battled back nicely and shot a 49 on the back nine to finish with a score of 111 in her first region tournament.
