Coming off their first loss of the season, it did not take Todd County Central long to get back on the winning track Friday night, as the Rebels rolled over Caverna 58-24. Senior running back MaQureim Mimms had another big night for Todd County, who lost for the first time last week at Hancock County.
The Rebels got on the board early, as JaTwan Graham punched it in from three yards out with 9:24 to go in the first quarter to give Todd County a 6-0 lead. Caverna battled back to tie the game at 6-6 on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 5:16 to go in the quarter. MaQureim Mimms scored twice before the first quarter ended, on a 19-yard run with 4:35 to go, and again on a 29-yard run with 28 seconds left, as the Rebels took a 22-6 lead at the end of one.
Todd County extended the lead to 28-6 in the second quarter as quarterback Asa Young took a keeper five yards to the end zone with 5:00 left in the first half.
The Rebels came out of the locker room and struck quickly once again. Sophomore running back Bryce Nolan ripped off a 37-yard run to push the lead out to 36-6. However, Caverna hit back when junior Tony Spears returned the kickoff for a touchdown to trim the lead to 36-12. Just over two minutes later MaQureim Mimms found the end zone for the third time, this time on a 10-yard run, to extend the lead to 44-12. The Colonels found the end zone on a 4th down pass from the 5-yard line with 4:09 to go in the 3rd quarter to make it 44-18, which is how the quarter ended.
The Rebel offense continued rolling in the 4th quarter, as Isaiah Fingers had a 70-yard run to put Todd County in front 50-18. It was at that point that Caverna’s Tony Spears broke off another long kickoff return to bring the Colonels within 50-24. Todd County’s defense then wrapped up the scoring for the night as Isaiah Fingers picked off a pass and returned it 35 yards for a score.
The win improves Todd County Central to 5-1 on the season, as they get ready to host McLean County next Friday night. Caverna falls to 0-6 on the season.
