The Trigg County girls’ soccer team had to deal with a flooded field and a lengthy delay, but prevailed 4-1 over the Lyon County Lady Lyons in the 5th District championship in Marion. The Lady Lyons were looking for their second straight title, but the Lady Wildcats claimed their first since 2014 and third in program history.
The Lady Wildcats took the lead 6 minutes into the contest when junior forward Madisen Ireland crossed for senior Libby Redd to finish at the back post. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, play was stopped due to lightning. The teams wouldn’t return to the field for over 2 hours, during which time more rain made the field barely playable.
After play resumed, the Lady Wildcats wasted no time extending their lead, with Redd adding her second goal on a breakaway after running onto a loose ball. Trigg County took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
With only 5 minutes gone in the second half, junior forward Brittney Kelly scored from close range for the Lady Wildcats. Midway through the second half, senior midfielder Alyssa Richardson scored the 4th and final Trigg County goal on a long shot from the left wing that dropped in over Lady Lyon junior goalkeeper Sabrina Gates. Lyon County would get on the board with 12 minutes left when freshman forward Destiny Dycus pounced on a loose ball in front of the goal and beat Trigg junior goalkeeper Julia Rhone from 15 yards. The final 4-1 score is the closest of the three matches the teams played this season.
Both teams advance to next week’s 2nd Region tournament being held at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.
