Webster County picked up their first region tournament win in school history Monday with a 5-2 win over Lyon County at the Stadium of Champions.

The Trojans and Lyons were locked in a defensive battle for most of the first half before junior Jorge Martinez got loose in front of the net to give Webster a 1-0 lead six minutes before halftime.

Webster gained control of the contest nine minutes into the second half when Josue Martinez banged home a rebound. Two minutes later, Webster added their third goal and later their fourth.

Lyon County got on the board in the 56th minute when Trace Adams took a shot that was misplayed by the Webster goalie.

Any chance at a comeback was stymied when Webster scored with 12 minutes left.

Lyon County rounded out the scoring with 3:44 left when Austin Duff scored on a breakaway for the final margin.

Josue Martinez finished with two goals for Webster County, while Joel McCormick and Santos Portillo added goals.

Lyon County, who was looking for their first win in the region tournament since 2006, finishes their season with a record of 9-9-1.

Webster County improved to 13-6-1 and will play Madisonville in Tuesday’s 6pm semifinal. The Maroons edged University Heights Academy 3-2 in double-overtime in the other quarterfinal.
