The Trigg County girls’ soccer team advanced to the 2nd Region semifinals for the first time since 2014, beating the Webster County Lady Trojans 8-1 Tuesday night at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School. The Lady Wildcats had beaten the Lady Trojans 9-0 in Dixon during the regular season.
It took 15 minutes for the Lady Wildcats to get on the scoreboard, but once junior Madisen Ireland scored off an assist from senior Libby Redd, it took only three minutes for them to stretch the lead to 3-0. Seniors Redd and Alyssa Richardson scored in quick succession, putting the Lady Wildcats in control. With under 10 minutes remaining in the half, Richardson got her second goal, giving the Lady Wildcats a 4-0 halftime lead.
Madisen Ireland got the scoring started in the second half less than 5 minutes in, outrunning the Lady Trojan defense and finishing into the far corner. Under constant pressure, the Webster County defense would deflect a Trigg shot into their own goal, giving the Lady Wildcats a 6-0 lead.
Webster County carved out a goal of their own, with sisters Mariah and Marissa Austin providing a glimpse of things to come when freshman Mariah crossed for sophomore Marissa to score off a header at the far post. The Lady Trojans had a chance to truly gain some momentum with 27 minutes left when they were awarded a penalty after a Trigg foul in the box, but the penalty kick effort hit the crossbar, preserving the 6-1 lead.
The Lady Wildcats would need only a minute and a half to make the Lady Trojans regret the missed opportunity, with Redd adding her second goal of the game on a solo effort, ending any hope of a comeback. Trigg’s Richardson completed her hat trick with only 20 seconds remaining, providing the 8th and final goal.
Trigg County now face the Caldwell County Lady Tigers in a Wednesday night semifinal with a trip to the championship on the line, where they would face the winner of the UHA and Henderson County semifinal winner.
