Austin Peay State University men’s cross country looks to build on their regular season success at the NCAA South Regionals 9 a.m., Friday, at Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa. Seven runners will make the trek down to Alabama to face 33 other teams in the regional event. Senior Mathew Biwott finished first for the Governors at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships Oct. 28, finishing the ten-kilometer course in 25:32.8.
Junior Wesley Gray and sophomore Tyler Smith crossed the line in 25:36.7 and 25:38.6 respectively. While Nash Young (25:48.63) and junior Hezron Kiptoo (25:53.3) rounded out the scoring for the Govs in the OVC Championship. The young freshmen duo Thomas Porter (27:12.7) and Elliot Giles (27:52.0) also will gain valuable experience running in their first NCAA regional event.
The Govs capitalized on their pack running style, earning a seventh place finish at the conference championships, as all five scoring runners crossed the line within a minute of each other. Head coach Doug Molnar will take a full field of seven athletes to Tuscaloosa for the first time since 2013.
