Trigg County appeared to be dead in the water late in the third quarter of their opener with Fulton County Tuesday, trailing by 15 points. The Wildcats outscored the Pilots 32-14 in the final frame to steal a 62-57 win and send the Wildcat faithful home happy.
DeOvion Day scored 18 points in the final three quarters and grabbed 15 rebounds in his first game as a Wildcat. The 6-6 senior hit 4-of-6 shots from the floor in the final quarter and grabbed four rebounds.
Trigg completed their comeback with Devron Triplet on the bench for the final 3:25. The senior guard, who scored 17 points and tallied four assists, fouled out during a stretch when Trigg cut the Pilot lead from 15 points to five.
Cam Jordan scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats hit 9-of-18 shots from the field and 12-of-14 at the free throw line.
Dre Smith scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Pilots, who hit 4-of-14 shots and turned the basketball over nine times.
Turnovers were a game-long issue for the Wildcats, who had 25 in the contest. That was a surprising stat for the Wildcats, who returned a wealth of experience at the guard position and didn’t commit more than 24 turnovers in a game last year.
Trigg County (1-0) opens district play Friday at Crittenden County as part of a boys/girls’ doubleheader. The Rockets lost their opener to Webster County 70-24 Tuesday.
