A nearly two-week layoff from game competition seemed to affect Heritage Christian Academy in their 40-36 loss to fourth-ranked Highlands in the first round of the KCAA Holiday Classic at Micah Christian Academy in Louisville.

HCA, the top-ranked team in this week’s poll, led 24-14 at halftime but was outscored 14-5 in the third quarter as Highlands ramped up their man defense. Highlands also hit 8-of-9 free throws in the second half, while HCA was 5-of-6 for the entire game.

HCA was led by Rachel West, who scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half. Chelsea Dortch added nine points, and Hope Flournoy scored all eight of her points in the first half.

HCA (3-3) moves to the consolation bracket Saturday morning where they will play defending KCAA state champion Trinity Christian, who they beat 33-27 two weeks ago.
