The Hopkinsville High School girls’ basketball team waited a week to get its season started, but did so in style with a 70-37 win over the visiting Todd County Central Lady Rebels. The Lady Tigers full court pressure led to turnovers and kept the Lady Rebels from getting into their offensive sets, and Hoptown jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. Hopkinsville continued to pressure, turning the Lady Rebels over, but committing fouls. However, the Lady Rebels only shot 4-16 from the free throw line in the first half, and trailed 37-16 at the half.
The Lady Rebels (1-3) came out of the locker room taking better care of the ball, and were only outscored 15-13 in the third quarter, but couldn’t dent the Lady Tigers’ lead and eventually fell 70-37. Junior point guard Breon Oldham led the way with 17 points, running the Lady Tiger offense along with senior guard London Foster, who chipped in 8 points. Juniors Yogi McKnight and Jayla Rose scored 10 each, with senior center Zakyra Stallworth stuffing the stat sheet with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 11 blocks. Freshman forward Lakayla Samuel rounded out the scoring with 4 second-half points.
Junior guard Amy Brumfield scored 9 second half points for the Lady Rebels, and finished with 12 total. Senior guard Alexis O’Daniel had 8, including two first-half 3 pointers. Freshman center Makayla Artis scored 7 points, all in the second half, with seniors Michaela Robertson and Tatyana Peterson collecting 4 each.
Both Hopkinsville and Todd County Central return to action on Tuesday, with the Lady Rebels travelling to Tennessee to face East Robertson, and Hoptown hosting the Murray High Lady Tigers (1-1).
