It was almost like they opened the doors and let the cold air inside Lyon County High School. The Lyon County Lady Lyons were unable to overcome cold shooting at the beginning of the first half and at the beginning of the 3rd and 4th quarters Friday night as they fell 36-28 to the Crittenden County Lady Rockets in a 5th District matchup.
The Lady Lyons struggled to find the basket early, as they did not score their first basket until 5:32 to go in the first quarter, making the score 6-2. The Lady Rockets then held the Lady Lyons to 3 points the rest of the quarter and led 10-5 at the end of one. Freshman Calista Collins had all five points for the Lady Lyons. Lyon County battled back in the second quarter, overcoming more cold shooting to cut the lead to 16-14 at the half.
Lyon County had more shooting trouble at the beginning of the second half, not getting a basket until 3:17 to go in the quarter. Neither team managed much offense during the period, with the Lady Rockets scoring 6 and the Lady Lyons scoring 4 to make it 22-18 after the 3rd.
The frosty cold shooting continued for Lyon County at the beginning of the 4th quarter, which made for a bad combination with Crittenden County’s 7-0 run to open the period to push the lead to 29-20. The Lady Lyons had opportunities to make runs at the Lady Rockets, which had issues with turnovers, but shots would just not fall for the Lady Lyons down the stretch.
Lyon County was led by Allison Murphy with 13 points and Calista Collins with 9. Shelby Summers paced Crittenden County with 11. Nahla Woodward added 10, while Mauri Collins had 9.
With the loss, Lyon County falls to 2-2 on the season. They go on the road Tuesday for another 5th District matchup against Trigg County.
