The University Heights Academy boys’ basketball team turned in its highest point total of the season Saturday night, hitting the century mark in a 100-67 win over Hopkins County Central. The Blazers have won four straight, including 2-0 in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic, and stand at 4-1 on the year. The Storm have lost five in a row and slip to 2-5.
UHA jumped out to a 14-5 lead before a Hopkins Central timeout with 4:51 left in the first quarter. The Storm would keep it close, trailing 30-22 after junior Kyky Tandy got his own rebound and a putback with just seconds left in the quarter. Tandy had 11 in the first eight minutes, followed by senior Kwun Dorsey with 6.
After building the lead to 10, Tandy had back-to-back dunks to push the lead to 44-31 with 2:20 left in the half. His 6 second quarter points gave him 17 for the half, followed by junior guard Jaylen Brown’s 7, and Dorsey and senior forward Malik Lovan’s 6 each. The Blazers took a comfortable 48-33 lead to the halftime locker room.
University Heights blew the game open in the third quarter, with a Tandy three point play giving them a 54-33 lead just a minute into the half. Junior forward TaQuan Hollowell got going for the Blazers, scoring 8 third quarter points, with junior guard Drew McGowan, and freshman KJ Crump chipping in 6. They outscored the Storm 30-19 in the quarter to take a 78-52 lead into the final frame.
The lead continued to swell, with the Blazers up 93-59 when all their starters went to the bench with half of the quarter remaining. The young Blazers came in and saw out the contest, strolling to the final score of 100-67.
Tandy was the leading scorer with 29, followed by Hollowell, the National Guard Player of the Game, with 19. Crump had 11, McGowan had 10, and Lovan finished with 8. Brown contributed 7, Dorsey 6, and freshman William Bryan had 4. Junior forward Zach Naylor and freshman DJ Quarles both had 3.
Next up for the Blazers is a trip to Paducah to take part in the Paducah Tilghman Christmas Tournament on December 21, where they’ll square off with 1-5 Seneca and 4-2 Paducah Tilghman, as well as a team TBA.
