Christian County’s wrestlers had a strong showing at their own Toyota of Hopkinsville Invitational Saturday, with six grapplers finishing either first or second in the event.
Niko Bussell was the lone Colonel wrestler to take first place, edging Reiss Groves of Cape Central, MO 4-2 to win the 195-pound class.
Gage Fowler was edged by Caldwell County’s Dylan Walls 9-8 in the championship of the 106-pound class. Also finishing in second place were Colonel wrestlers Austin Gibson (113), Jakerion Merritt (132), Ishmael Griffie (138), and Diion Leavell (182).
Other Colonels scoring on the afternoon were Neal Aldridge, who took third in the 145-pound class; Markus Green, who was third in the 220-pound class; Mike Elkins, who finished fourth in the 185-pound class; Kenyon Drayton, who was fourth in the 170-pound class; Ethan Wells, who finished fifth in the 120-pound class; and Cameron Coleman, who was sixth in the 152-pound class.
As a team, Christian County totaled 233 points to finish 15 points behind first place Woodford County in the 25-team event. Woodford County entered the week ranked fourth statewide, while Christian County is ranked eighth, according to KentuckyWrestling.com.
