The University Heights Academy boys’ basketball team went on the road for the second time in as many days on Saturday, winning 58-49 over Southwestern at the Patriot Classic at Lincoln County. The win is the Blazers fourth straight, and improves their record to 9-4 on the year, while Southwestern drops to 8-4.
The Blazers brought the defensive intensity from the opening whistle, holding the Warriors to 4 first-quarter points while scoring 10 of their own. Just as they did on Friday against Madisonville, the Blazers erupted in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 22-14 on their way to a 32-18 halftime lead.
Junior guard Kyky Tandy led the Blazers with 12 first half points, including 8 in the second quarter. Junior guard Drew McGowan also got into double figures in the first half, dropping in 11, 9 of which came in the Blazers’ big second quarter.
Southwestern came out of the locker room with renewed purpose, ripping off 26 third-quarter points to cut the Blazers lead to 49-44 going into the final frame. The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle, with neither team able to get into double figures. UHA held the Warriors to 5 points over the last eight minutes, scoring 9 of their own to see out the 58-49 win.
Tandy’s 25 points led the Blazers, followed by McGowan’s 11. Senior forward Malik Lovan scored 7, freshman guard KJ Crump had 6, and junior forward Taquan Hollowell had a relatively quiet outing with 4. Junior guard Jaylen Brown had 3 and senior Kwun Dorsey had a bucket to close out the Blazer scoring.
The Blazers’ busy weekend continues on Sunday, when they travel to McCracken County to face Murray High (8-9) at Mustang Madness.
