Todd County Rallies Late to Upend UHA in Elkton

Regardless of the outcome of Monday’s game, Todd County Central Coach Travis Lovan had planned on giving his team Tuesday off after playing four games in four days. The break will be even more enjoyable after the Lady Rebels rallied to beat University Heights Academy 48-41 in Elkton.

The loss avenged a 55-43 loss to the Lady Blazers Dec. 30 in Hopkinsville.

Lovan has been utilizing a platoon system in recent weeks – one group for offense and one for defense. He’ll be the first one to tell you neither was impressive in the first half Monday. Lily Hendricks hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points, and Anshanique Leavell added seven points as the Lady Blazers ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 22-18 at halftime.

The Lady Blazers extended their lead to 32-24 behind five points from Alex Juckett and four from Hendricks. Lovan then inserted the offensive platoon who scored four quick points to cut the deficit to 32-28 after three quarters.

The Lady Rebels opened the fourth quarter on a 13-5 to grab a 41-37 lead with 3:12 left. Leavell then came up with two steals for UHA and converted them into buckets to tie the game with 1:55 left.

Amy Brumfield then capped off her big fourth quarter with the go-ahead 3-pointer from the corner with 31 seconds left. The junior guard scored 10 of her 14 points in the final quarter and later clinched the game with two free throws.

Brumfield led a diverse Lady Rebel offense that saw nine different players score. Makayla Artis added eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Alexis O’Daniel added six points including a bucket that gave Todd a 39-27 lead. Michaela Robertson, Tatyana Peterson, Natalie Groves, and Paige Rager all scored four points.

Hendricks led UHA with 15 points, and Leavell scored 11. Juckett added eight points, and Naliscya Hall scored six points.

UHA (8-11) doesn’t play again until Saturday when they play Lyon County in the Akridge Ace Hardware Shootout in Eddyville.

Todd County Central (7-10) surpassed their win total from last year and will travel to 13th District rival Franklin-Simpson Friday.
