Three weeks to go until the start of district tournament action, and the Second Region has split into three distinct tiers of teams that can make a solid postseason run. Here are this week’s YourSportsEdge.com’s Second Region girls’ basketball rankings.
Christian County (17-4) – The Lady Colonels have won seven straight games and get a return match with No. 4 Hopkinsville Friday. Christian County beat Hoptown 57-44 last week. The Lady Colonels finish their regular season with a gauntlet – Owensboro Catholic, Murray, and Webster County.
Webster County (18-6) – After losing to No. 3 Henderson County 64-53, there are some who would suggest dropping the Lady Trojans below Henderson. However, you have to look at the overall body of work as well as taking into account the Janet Jackson philosophy “What have you done for me lately?” As of now, Webster County has done enough to hang on to the No. 2 spot.
Henderson County (10-8) – Here come the five-time defending region champions, and it comes as a surprise to no one. Henderson County has won four of five games, including a win over No. 2 Webster County. Their only blemish during that stretch was a four-point loss to Muhlenberg County.
Hopkinsville (15-7) – The Lady Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Muhlenberg County, who beat No. 3 Henderson County a few days earlier. The Lady Tigers are the final top tier team in the region at this point.
Lyon County (14-6) – The Lady Lyons continue to find ways to win close games. They have won five of six games, losing only to Williamsburg in the All-A Classic State Tournament. They are the first team of the second tier region teams.
Hopkins County Central (11-10) – The Lady Storm continue to be an inconsistent bunch, beating No. 7 Caldwell County but losing to No. 9 Madisonville. They can greatly solidify their ranking with their upcoming schedule. Or it may cause them to drop.
Caldwell County (11-8) – The Lady Tigers have suddenly forgotten how to score as was evidenced in their losses to No. 6 Hopkins County Central and to No. 12 Crittenden County.
Livingston Central (13-12) – The Lady Cardinals were hammered by No. 10 Union County but rebounded to beat No. 12 Crittenden County. They only have three games left on their schedule but will be the top seed in the Fifth District Tournament. They are the last of the second tier teams.
Madisonville (5-13) – The Lady Maroons have dropped four of five games but only one of those came against region competition. They did knock off No. 6 Hopkins County Central and get a return match with No. 7 Caldwell County Friday.
Union County (7-15) – The Bravettes make the biggest jump in the rankings this week thanks to a 20-point win over No. 8 Livingston Central and No. 11 Crittenden County.
University Heights (8-12) – The Lady Blazers have dropped three straight games, but get a chance to make a move with a road game at No. 5 Lyon County Saturday.
Crittenden County (10-11) – The Lady Rockets have dropped four of five games, but that one win came on the road over No. 7 Caldwell County.
Trigg County (7-14) – The Lady Wildcats have dropped seven of eight, mostly due to an offense that is scoring just 31.2 points a game.
Dawson Springs (5-16) – The Lady Panthers are 1-10 against region competition. They look to improve that record in coming week against No. 13 Trigg County and No. 15 Fort Campbell.
Fort Campbell (0-16) – The Lady Falcons are still winless but are showing signs of scoring, averaging 19 points over their last three games. They were scoring 11 per game before that.
