Livingston Central won a three-way coin toss and will be the top seed in the Boys’ Fifth District Basketball Tournament that begins Feb. 19 in Marion.
The four schools voted unanimously at their annual district meeting Wednesday to use a three-way coin toss as a tie-breaking method. The current district by-laws on file with the KHSAA specify how two-way ties are to be solved but did not mention three-way ties. Livingston Central, Lyon County, and Trigg County all tied for first place with identical 2-2 records against the other and 2-0 against Crittenden County.
Lyon County Athletic Director Jeff Doom said he could only remember one other time when there was a three-way tie solved with a coin toss. The three coaches flipped coins with the odd result winning top seed. Livingston Coach Bill McNamara was the only coach to flip ‘tails’ and was awarded the top seed.
Lyon County Coach Jeff Embrey won a second coin toss with Trigg County Coach Payton Croft to win the second seed. The Lyons will play three seed Trigg County Monday, Feb. 19 at 7:30. Livingston and Crittenden County play the first game of the night at 6pm. The district championship will be played Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7pm.
The schools also voted to use a blind draw in the event of a four-way tie in the future.
There was no such drama with the girls seeding. Top seed Livingston Central will play four seed Trigg County Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 6pm. Crittenden County won a coin toss with Lyon County for the second seed. They will play at 7:30. The girls’ championship will be Friday, Feb. 23 at 7pm.
Tickets for the district tournament at Crittenden County High School will be six dollars. The entire Fifth District Tournament will be broadcast on Oldies Radio 100.9 FM and online at wkdzradio.com.
