The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers battled their way through cold shooting and Lyon County’s strong rebounding effort to pickup a 57-47 win in a regional girls battle Tuesday night at Tiger Gym. The key difference in the game turned out to be Hopkinsville’s pressure defense which forced the Lady Lyons into several turnovers that led directly to Lady Tiger baskets.
It took both teams a little while to get going, as neither team was able to score for the first two and a half minutes of the contest. Lyon County got the first score on a 3 pointer by Sophie Bingham, and then extended the lead to 5-0. Hopkinsville finally got their offense rolling and went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for the first time of the night. Lyon County held a 9-8 lead when the first quarter came to an end.
With Lyon County leading 13-11 early in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers held Lyon County scoreless for more than 3 minutes, while scoring ten points of their own to take a 21-13 lead. Hopkinsville would hold a 23-17 head as the teams headed into the locker room at the half. Even with cold first half shooting, Hoptown’s pressure was able to create enough offense to put the Lady Tigers in the lead.
In the 3rd quarter, behind the play of Sophie Bingham, the Lady Lyons battled back to tie the game at 28-28 with 3:50 to go in the quarter. With the game tied at 30-30, over the end of the 3rd quarter and the beginning of the 4th quarter, Hopkinsville went on a 13-0 run to finally take control of the game. Breon Oldham and Jayla Rose did most of the damage during the run.
After pushing the lead out to 43-30, Hopkinsville was able to hold the Lady Lyons at arm’s length for the rest of the contest. Lyon County would get no closer than nine points for the rest of the game.
Lyon County was led by Sophie Bingham with 19 points. Calista Collins added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hopkinsville had a big night from Jayla Rose with 18 points. Breon Oldham added 16 points, while Anna King added 11.
The loss drops Lyon County to 18-8 on the season, while Hopkinsville improves to 18-8.
