Hoptown Wrestlers Advance to State Tourney’s Second Day

Both of Hopkinsville’s wrestlers advanced to the second day of the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Lexington.

No. 11 Zaltko Skuljan won his first two matches in the 152-pound class before falling in the quarterfinals. Skuljan’s first two wins were over Jonas Reyman of DeSales and No. 10 James Kraeszig of St. Xavier. In the quarterfinals, he dropped a 9-4 decision to No. 6 Drevon Jones of Newport. Skuljan will face either No. 14 Chase Fink of Anderson County or No. 16 Stephen Little of Union County in the consolation bracket.

Kolby Morris, the 13th ranked wrestler in the 170-pound class, also advanced to the second day of the state tournament. He beat Connor Harrison of Bullitt Central in the opener before dropping his second round match to No. 15 Levid Rodriguez of Johnson Central. Morris scored an 11-4 decision over Darrian Akers of Pikeville and will advance to wrestle No. 6 Jack Lucas of Male to keep his chances of reaching the podium alive.

St. Xavier and defending state champion Union County are tied for first place with 108 points. Christian County is seventh with 64.5 points. Caldwell County is 26th with 27 points, followed by Hopkinsville in 45th place (13); Trigg County in 48th place (11); and Fort Campbell in 56th place (8).
