After knocking off the top-ranked wrestler in the 182-pound class Friday, Christian County’s Diion Leavell had the confidence needed to claim the school’s first individual state title since 2004.
The Colonel senior knocked off top-ranked Braden Mulcahy of Walton-Verona on Friday by a 15-5 score. Leavell, the No. 3 wrestler in the class, beat No. 9 Zach Chandler of Male 12-3 in the semifinals Saturday. He faced off against second-ranked Dylan Gray of Caldwell County in the championship match and fell 8-4 in the title match.
Leavell returned to the medal stand at the state tournament after finishing third as a junior. He was attempting to become the first Colonel to win a state title since A.J. Green and Kris Perry won titles in 2004. Diion’s father Damien won a state title in 1999 for the Colonels.
Diion finishes his senior season with a record of 37-6.
