Webster County showed why they were the No. 1 team in the final YourSportsEdge.com regular season girls’ basketball rankings as they throttled Dawson Springs 65-21 in the first game of the Second Region Tournament Monday in Dixon.
The Lady Trojans opened hot, hitting six 3-pointers in the first quarter. Karlie Keeney scored 11 of her 13 points in the frame. Webster was helped by seven Dawson turnovers on their first seven possessions that saw the Lady Trojans jump out to a 17-0 lead.
Webster led 37-7 after one quarter and 50-14 at halftime to enact the running clock for the second half.
Marissa Austin led the Lady Trojans with 15 points, Jessica Winders added 14 points.
The 44-point win is the largest for a Webster County team in a first-round region game, eclipsing an 81-38 win over Lyon County in 1999.
Dawson Springs (12-20), making their first region tournament appearance since 2006, got seven points from both Orten and Denisha Randolph. Brooklyn Cotton scored six.
Webster County (26-6) will advance to Friday’s semifinals against either Hopkinsville or Crittenden County.
