One thing was for sure before the first Boys 2nd Region semifinal game of the day Saturday, and that was that the Colonels were going to win. The difference was the Christian County Colonels had Detorrion Ware and the Henderson County Colonels did not, and Christian County cruised in the 2nd half to a 78-61 win to advance to Monday night’s regional final.

Even with a mid-afternoon start on a Saturday, the atmosphere was electric as the two bands of Colonels took to the floor, and the beginning of the game did nothing to put a damper on it. Detorrion Ware buried a deep 3 just 15 seconds into the game and the battle was on. The early part of the quarter was a show between ware and Henderson County’s Kale Gaither. In the first five minutes of the game Ware and Gaither each scored 9 points, Ware’s coming on three deep 3-point shots. Ware had a bit more help early, and the Colonels got out to a 13-9 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth through the remainder of the quarter. Another long three from Ware in the waning seconds gave Christian County a 22-14 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the pace slowed down just a little, the intensity did not let up a fiber. Christian County would extend the lead to as many as 9 in the quarter. Henderson rallied late in the second to trim the lead to 37-32 at the half.

When the second half began, Detorrion Ware, as he has done several times over the course of the season, simply took over the game. Christian County scored the first 8 points of the second half, seven of those by Ware, and pushed the lead out to 45-32. The Colonels added another 7-0 run later in the quarter to push the lead on out to 52-35. Christian County would lead at the end of the quarter 58-45.
Ware had 17 in the quarter, and 35 points total at the end of the quarter.

Down the stretch Henderson could get no closer than 13 points, as the Colonels would lead by as many as 19 points before settling for the 17 point win.

Spectacular may not be a big enough word for Ware’s performance Saturday afternoon. The senior torched Henderson County for 45 points. Cory Trice added 12 points, and Fred Tandy chipped with 11.

Kale Gaither ended up with 20 points for Henderson County. Isaac Anglin added 18.

Christian County improves to 22-7 and heads to the championship game for the third consecutive year. Henderson County sees their season come to an end at 15-14.
