Logan Darnall homered on the game’s first pitch against Lyon County Monday.

Logan Darnall did something no other Trigg County softball player had ever done – lead off the season with a homerun.

Seven innings later, her Lady Wildcat teammates did something Trigg hasn’t done in 20 years – beat Lyon County.
Darnall’s lead-off homerun gave Trigg County a lead they never relinquished in a 5-3 win over the Lady Lyons Monday in Eddyville. The win snapped a 49-game Trigg losing streak to Lyon County that dated back to 1997.

Ashlyn Keller added an RBI double in the first as Trigg jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Lyon got on the board in the second when freshman Calista Collins crushed a pitch over the left field fence to draw to within 2-1.

Julia Rhone’s RBI single in the fourth inning scored Madison Simpson for a 3-1 Lady Wildcat lead.

Collins doubled in the fourth and scored on a Kyra Craft single to left to cut the Lyon deficit to 3-2.

Trigg added another run in the fifth when Autumn Durham laid down a bunt that scored Darnall, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Trigg’s final run came in the seventh when pinch-hitter Adri Phillips singled and scored on a Kara Southwood single.

Sydney Melton had an RBI double in the seventh, but Hannah Colbert was able to pitch around some danger to close out the win. Colbert scattered seven hits and struck out 12 while walking just one.

Southwood had two of Trigg County’s eight hits in the contest.

Collins had two of Lyon’s seven hits.

Trigg County (1-0) has won consecutive season openers for the first time in five years. Their last win over Lyon County was a 17-3 win on April 21, 1997 in Cadiz. Lyon County had won 54 of the 55 previous fast-pitch meetings between the district rivals.

The Lady Wildcats play at Russellville Tuesday.

Lyon County (1-2) will host McCracken County Tuesday in a late add to the schedule.
