Rachel West
Two members of the Heritage Christian girls basketball team have been recognized for their performance on the court. Seniors Rachel West and Hope Flournoy received the recognition from the National Athletic Association of Private Schools.
West was named as a Division III All American. She finished the season averaging 17.5 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 3.4 SPG and 1.6 BPG. In a news release, West was described as “an electrifying floor-leader with a scorer’s mentality. She consistently manufactures and delivers off the dribble, and few are as superb in transition. She has the strength of a power forward but court awareness that would rival any guard. She is highly efficient in the mid-range game with a very quick-release.”
One committee member stated, “She is a Russell Westbrook clone. She will overpower the post player to grab the rebound and be laying the ball up on the other side of the court before the opposing team realized what happened.”
Flournoy was named as the Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year and as an Honorable Mention Division III All-American. She averaged 14.7 RPG, 4.3 BPG, and 2.3 SPG. Association officials note that the Welch College commit was under their radar until the KCAA state tournament. In those three games she had 50 rebounds, 15 blocks, and seven steals (2.3).
One committee member stated, “She is a hybrid of Tayshaun Prince and Draymond Greene.” On the court, she had the demeanor of Prince and used her long arms to guard multiple positions. However, like Draymond, her team doesn’t have near the success without her because she does the dirty work. In most of the game film, she was on an island by herself defending the interior but somehow managed to lock the paint down.
