One day after Owensboro was chosen as the inaugural home of the Kentucky Class 2A Championships, the sectional brackets have been released for the basketball tournaments that will begin in 2019.
The Section I matchups are the same for the both the boys and girls. Section I is comprised of teams in Regions 1-4.
Trigg County will play at Warren East with the winner to play a quarterfinal game at Glasgow in the quarterfinals.
The other upper bracket game has Union County traveling to Calloway County with the winner to play at Hopkins County Central.
The bottom bracket features a first round game in Princeton between Caldwell County and Paducah Tilghman. The winner will play at Webster County in the quarterfinals.
The other bottom bracket matchup has Warren Central at Franklin-Simpson with the winner to meet Allen County-Scottsville in the quarterfinals.
The first round games are to be completed by January 5 with the schools to determine the date. Since the matchups are the same, schools could schedule a doubleheader for each of the first round games.
The second round is to be completed by Jan. 12 with Hopkins County Central to host the Section I semifinals and championship game Jan. 12-13. Both the sectional runner-up and champion will advance to the state tournament to be played at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
On the girls’ side, Section I features Webster County, who advanced to the Sweet 16 from the Second Region last year. Glasgow advanced to the Fourth Region semifinals, while Calloway County advanced to the First Region semifinals.
On the boys’ side, Warren Central won the Fourth Region title and advanced to the semifinals of the Sweet 16.
There are no teams from the Third Region participating in the Class 2A Championships next year.
The Class 2A Championships are for teams too large for the All-A Classic and have less than 1,000 students in grades 9-12. The tournament is not sanctioned by the KHSAA, who does not classify basketball by size.
There are 66 schools eligible to compete in the Class 2A Championships, with 45 expected to participate in 2018-19.
