Christian County is turning to a former Colonel player to try and turn around their boys’ soccer program. Matthew Gibson was introduced as the new coach Friday in a media conference at the school.
Gibson, 23, is a 2013 graduate of Christian County where he played seven years for the Colonel soccer program. After high school, the former Colonel defensive standout played at Hannibal-LaGrange University in Missouri and eventually graduated from Murray State University.
He told the players at Friday’s introduction that they had better be ready to work and get into shape, adding that workouts will begin after spring break.
Gibson was an assistant coach the past two seasons under Arne Seeger, who resigned in February after seven seasons and a 30-51-7 record. The Colonels were 5-14-3 last year and lost to Hopkinsville 10-0 in the first round of the district tournament.
One of Gibson’s first tasks will be to replace seven departing seniors, and then work to get the Colonels back to the region tournament for the first time since 2014.
