For what seemed like the first time all season, there was sunshine and blue skies on a day that softball action was scheduled, and the Christian County Lady Colonels took advantage of the opportunity. The Lady Colonels used a four run outburst in the bottom of the 6th inning Saturday to get past Woodford County 5-1.
Pitcher Lexie O’Daniel came up big for Christian County, going the distance and throwing a no-hitter in the circle.
Woodford County got on the board in the top of the 1st inning. Woodford took advantage of a couple of walks by O’Daniel, along with a stolen base and a sacrifice play to take a 1-0 lead, without the benefit of a hit.
Christian County also got their first run without a hit. A couple of Woodford County errors and a passed ball allowed Hope Jones to score in the bottom of the 3rd inning to tie the game at 1-1.
The two pitchers battled it out from that point forward, until the bottom of the 6th inning. In that inning, Tyler Shemwell started the inning getting on base thanks to a Woodford County error. Taylor Shemwell followed with a single. Following a fielder’s choice, Pickle Winkler walked to load the bases. Another fielder’s choice found the Lady Colonels still with the bases loaded and now two outs.
Halle Hendricks battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a bases loaded walk to put Christian County in front 2-1. Hope Jones then settled the issue, clearing the bases with a 3 run double to extend the lead to 5-1. Lexie O’Daniel was then able to close out the game in the top of the 7th for the win.
Hope Jones went 1-4 with 3 RBIs for Christian County. Halle Hendricks was 1-2 with an RBI. Tyler Shemwell had the only other hit for the Lady Colonels.
O’Daniel went all 7 innings, picking up the no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking 6.
