Tanner Thomas pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14 batters in UHA's 3-0 win over Russellville

University Heights Academy spit their afternoon twinbill against out-of-region competition Saturday at Simmons Field. Tanner Thomas pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener as the Blazers beat Russellville 3-0.

Thomas fanned 14 batters and walked only one Russellville batter in a game that saw each team only get three hits.

Drew McGowan had two hits, including a two-run single in the fifth inning that broke open a scoreless contest.

McGowan would add the third run with a steal of second, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and a steal of home as part of a double steal.

Zach Naylor had the other hit for the Blazers.

Dillon Porter doubled for Russellville (0-4) and took the pitching loss, despite striking out eight and allowing three hits.

In the nightcap, Marshall County put up a crooked number in every inning of a 20-3 win over the Blazers.

After taking a 2-1 lead after one inning, Marshall County scored six in the second, seven in the third, and five in the fourth inning. The Marshals were helped by five UHA errors and 10 walks.

Dan Johnson and Drew McGowan each had doubles for the Blazers, with McGowan adding two RBIs. Luke Welch also had a hit and RBI for UHA.

Dawson Smothers had three hits and two RBIs for Marshall County, who later improved to 4-0 with a 34-2 win over Russellville. All four of Marshall County’s wins have been decided by the mercy rule.

UHA (3-3) will travel to Crittenden County on Saturday, April 7.
