Webster County Uses Long Ball to Down Lady Wildcats

The Trigg County softball team outhit visiting Webster County 10-9, but the Lady Trojans used three home runs to top the Lady Wildcats 14-6 on Monday night at the Recreation Complex.  Trigg County was looking for its third-straight win, but falls to 4-3 on the year, while Webster County improves to 4-2.

Trigg took the lead in its half of the first inning when junior Madison Simpson singled on a line drive to left field to bring home freshman Kara Southwood.  Junior Autumn Durham doubled the lead with a sacrifice to score junior Hannah Colbert.

Webster County answered in a big way in the top of the second with a grand slam by junior Kayla Yates to take a 4-2 lead.  Freshman Phelan Dossett scored on a passed ball, followed by a Colbert single to knock in junior Logan Darnall, tying things up for the Lady Wildcats in the bottom of the second.

The Lady Wildcats regained the lead in the third on a sacrifice by freshman Adri Phillips that scored Durham, but another homer, this time a 3-run shot by the Lady Trojans Hadlee Carter gave them a 7-5 lead.  Trigg got one back in the fourth on a sacrifice by Darnall to score Dossett, but Webster County blew the game open with its second grand slam of the night, this time by junior Hattie Hartman, to lead 12-6.  With the game in hand, the Lady Trojans tacked on 2 more in their half of the seventh for the final 14-6 score.

Dossett had a big night at the plate for the Lady Wildcats, going 3-3 with a triple and scoring twice.  Colbert also had multiple hits, finishing 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Darnall, Durham, and Simpson each had a hit and an RBI.  Colbert took the loss, going all seven innings and allowing 14 runs, 6 earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Sophomore Grace Scott earned the win for Webster County, pitching 4.0 innings with five hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, to go with eight strikeouts and a walk.  Yates had 5 RBI, followed by Hartman with 4 and Carter with 3 to lead the Lady Trojans.

Trigg County will be back in action on Tuesday when Graves County (4-1) makes the trip to Cadiz.
