Lyon County freshmen Sydney Melton and Calista Collins both connected with late-game homers to push the Lady Lyons’ softball team to a 10-9 come-from-behind win in Eddyville on Friday night.  The win is Lyon County’s fifth straight, moving them over .500 for the first time this season at 8-7.  Calloway County has dropped its last two to slip to 5-5 overall.

After falling behind in the first inning on a 2-run homer by Lady Lakers’ freshman Paige Weatherly, Lyon County took its first lead in the bottom of the third.  Senior Sophie Bingham knocked-in 2 with a double, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman Kaelyn Conger for a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Calloway got a run across to tie things up, before taking a 4-3 lead in the sixth.  Down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh, Collins doubled on a hard-hit ball down the first-base line to bring in Melton and send the game into extra innings.

The Lady Lakers erupted for 4 runs in the top of the eighth to take an 8-4 lead, setting up the late-game drama.  Once again down to their last out, Lyon County 7th grader Gracen Wynn singled to score freshman Kerstin Craft.  With the count 1-1 and two on base, Melton ripped a shot down the third-base line that cleared the fence to tie the game at 8.

In their half of the ninth, the Lady Lakers again took the lead on an RBI single, leaving Lyon County needing one more rally.  Bingham was placed on second to begin the inning, before Collins crushed a 2-1 pitch well over the center-field fence to give the Lady Lyons the walk-off 10-9 victory.

Bingham worked all nine innings to earn the win, allowing 7 runs, 6 earned, on ten hits with twelve strikeouts and four walks.  Collins and Melton both had two hits and 3 RBI to lead the attack, followed by Bingham with a hit and 2 RBI.  Sophomore Allye Culp had three hits, Wynn had two hits and an RBI, and Conger knocked-in a run.

Weatherly took the loss for Calloway, going 8.0 innings and yielding 8 earned runs on eleven hits, while striking-out six and walking two.  She also had a hit and 2 RBI, as did freshman Paige Kramer.

The Lady Lyons have a big Saturday of softball on tap, facing Hopkinsville, Stewart County, TN, and Obion County (Troy), IN in the Trigg County Lady Cat Invitational.
