Ben Knight admits he had a chip on his shoulder entering this week’s Second Region Tennis Tournament in Henderson. The Caldwell County senior won the region title last year but a late season loss to this year’s top seed Jon Nunez of Henderson County bumped him to No. 3 in the seeding for this week.

After breezing to the finals with consecutive 6-0, 6-0 wins, Knight beat Nunez 6-2, 7-5 to become the first Caldwell tennis player since Clint Joiner in 2013 to repeat as region champ. It also marked the second straight year Knight downed Nunez for the region title.

Knight’s strategy was more aggressive play at the net which kept Nunez off balance for the majority of the match.

Knight, Nunez, Hopkinsville’s Newcomb Maddux and Lee Edward Major will all advance to the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament May 17-19 in Lexington.
