There would be no rally this time to force extra innings. There would be no late game heroics needed to keep the Christian County Lady Colonels from losing their first game all season to a Kentucky opponent. The Lady Colonels took care of business early in the game Monday, on their way to a 12-2 five inning win over the Trigg County Lady Wildcats in the opening round of the 2nd Region softball tournament at Mortons Gap.
Back on May 4th, Christian County had a big late game lead on the Lady Wildcats, only to see Trigg County rally in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game and force extra innings, where Lexie O’Daniel hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 8th inning to key Christian County to the 9-6 win.
This time, there were no late game heroics needed as the Lady Colonels got the big lead, and put the game away to advance on to the regional semifinal and their third showdown this season with the defending state champion Madisonville Lady Maroons.
Monday afternoon at Hopkins Central, Trigg County got on the boards in the top of the 1st inning to take a 1-0 lead on a pair of singles and a Christian County error. The Lady Colonels went quietly in the bottom of the inning, and for just a moment, a brief moment, some in the crowd may have wondered if the May 4th game was playing on the minds of the Lady Colonels.
Those thoughts quickly vanished as Christian County scored the next ten runs of the game, two in the second, five in the third, and three more in the 4th. Trigg got a run back in the top of the 5th to make it 10-2. But this time, there would be no chance for a late inning rally, as the Lady Colonels tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to end the game.
Tyler Shemwell had a big day for the Lady Colonels, going 3-3 with 2 RBIs. Macy Lancaster was 3-3 with two runs scored. Reni Shemwell was 1-2 with a 2 run home run for Christian County.
Kara Southwood and Phelan Dossett were both 1-2 with an RBI for Trigg County.
In the circle, Regan Hancock gave the Lady Colonels four solid innings, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out eight and walking none.
A tough day for Trigg County pitcher Hannah Colbert, as she was touched up for ten runs, eight of them earned on 8 hits.
Christian County improved to 33-3-1, while Trigg County ended a solid season with a record of 22-14.
