Former Christian County player Matt Gibson takes over the reins to the Colonel soccer program in 2018, replacing Arne Seeger after four seasons in charge. Gibson inherits a team that faded down the stretch last year, losing six of its last seven to finish the season at 5-14-3. The Colonels managed 35 goals, but surrendered 99, falling 10-0 to Hopkinsville in the first round of the 8th District tournament to end the season.
The Colonels return without the services of seven graduated seniors, including Luis Macario, the team-assist leader with 6. Macario also chipped in 8 goals, second on the team behind then-junior Ben Settle. Settle returns for his senior year having scored 9 goals, followed closely by fellow senior Luke Ferrell with 7. Ferrell also tied for third on the team last season with 3 assists. Juniors Elber Macario and goalkeeper McKay Dunn both return as well, with Macario finishing second on the team with 4 assists and Dunn recording 3 shutouts while allowing 5.2 goals a game.
The Colonels start the season with a crucial 8th District match-up at University Heights Academy on August 13. They last beat the Blazers in the season-opener in 2016, claiming a 3-2 result on the road. The Colonels will be chasing their first district championship since 2014.
