The Hopkinsville girls’ soccer team started strong on Saturday against Apollo, controlling the contest for the first twenty minutes and taking a 1-0 lead, but faded as the game wore on and lost 7-2. The Lady Tigers slip to 1-2 while the E-gals have the same record after their first win.
Hopkinsville were on the front foot from the start, with Ana Hernandez putting them ahead less than five minutes into the game. The Lady Tigers continued to control the game for the first twenty minutes, but began to lose their grip as the half progressed. At the halfway mark of the first half, Shelby Taylor scored for the E-gals to tie the game and the teams were deadlocked at the break.
Apollo took control of the match immediately in the second half, with Caitlyn Blandford finding the back of the net and the Lady Tigers surrendering an own goal inside the first five minutes. Taylor scored again with twenty-six minutes to play, but Hoptown’s Allison Wood cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Apollo goal to cut the lead to 4-2. However, the Lady Tigers’ comeback hopes were dashed over the last sixteen minutes, as Taylor scored twice more and a nice half-volley by Natalie Smith off a corner kick gave Apollo the 7-2 victory.
The Lady Tigers return to the pitch on Tuesday when the 1-0 Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado visit the Stadium of Champions.
