A pretty good weekend for the Caldwell County Lady Tigers volleyball team. The Lady Tigers made the trip to Owensboro High School Saturday to take part in the Best of the West event and came away 2-1 on the weekend against some fairly stiff competition.

The Lady Tigers opened the day Saturday against South Warren. The Lady Spartans came into the day unbeaten, having lost only one set, and were a team that reached the final four of last year’s state tournament. The Lady Tigers battled the Lady Spartans but were unable to come away with a set, falling in straight sets 25-19, 25-19, and 25-17.

The second match of the day found the Lady Tigers taking on the Lady Aces from Owensboro Catholic. Caldwell County took the first set 25-20. Catholic came back and took a long difficult second set, winning 26-24. The Lady Tigers returned the favor in the 3rd set, winning 26-24. Caldwell County was then able to wear the Lady Aces down and put them away in the 4th set 25-16 to take the match 3-1.

In their final match of the day, the Lady Tigers found themselves matched up against the Elizabethtown Lady Panther. Caldwell County jumped out quickly in the match, winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-16. E-town battled back to take the 3rd set 25-23. Caldwell County then put the pedal down in the 4th set to win 25-18 and take the match 3-1.

Lady Tiger head coach Daniel Cortner says the day was good for his team, getting to play 11 sets against three traditionally strong volleyball programs.

Caldwell County improves to 7-2 on the season, and will return to action Tuesday at Hopkins Central in a 7th District showdown.
