There hasn’t been a lot of separation between Hopkinsville and Henderson County on the soccer pitch in recent years. Last year, Hoptown beat the Colonels on penalty kicks in the region semifinals. This year, the Colonels have been considered the favorite to unseat the Tigers as the region champ. Tuesday was supposed to settle some of that discussion, but it’s going to have to wait until the region tournament.
Jose Favela scored with less than three minutes to go to force a 2-2 with the Colonels at the Stadium of Champions. It was a match that Hoptown never led and trailed for 42 minutes. But in the end, the Tigers proved their resilience in tying Henderson in the regular season for the second straight season.
Max Wawrin got Henderson on the board in the 33rd minute when he beat Xavier Bussell on a cross in front.
Hopkinsville got on the board in the 60th minute when Tyler Greenwell tied it with his tenth goal of the season. The good mood for the Tigers was short-lived when Sam Cloutier bent in a shot from the right side less than a minute later to put the Colonels back ahead 2-1.
It appeared the Colonels (7-4-2) were going to escape with their first win over Hopkinsville in seven games dating back to 2013, but Favela had other ideas as he punched home a Ryan Roussel shot with less than three minutes left.
Hopkinsville (8-4-1) will play at McCracken County Thursday.
