There are big changes coming for post season play in Kentucky High School baseball and softball. Both will now we going to eight team state tournaments, effective this spring. The decision was approved by the KHSAA Board of Control during its meeting Thursday.
Both baseball and softball will now have a semi-state round between the regional tournament and state tournament. The set up is similar to boys and girls soccer, which also have a semi-state round in their postseasons.
The change is bigger for high school softball, which previously held a double-elimination state tournament. Baseball had previously been single-elimination, with all 16 teams advancing to one state tournament site. The KHSAA voted in February to change softball to a single-elimination tournament.
This year’s baseball tournament will be at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, June 5-8. The state softball tournament will be June 6-8, with the site yet to be determined.
