The Trigg County boys’ soccer team scored 4 1st-half goals on the way to a 5-1 win at Russellville on Monday night. The Wildcats stop a 2-game slide to improve to 11-1, while the Panthers dip below .500 at 8-9-1.
Leading-scorer Elijah Gaines put Trigg County in front inside the first 10 minutes, followed 10 minutes later by a free-kick goal from Will Jolly. Jolly fed Gaines for the 3rd a short time later, and Daniel Martin capped the 4-goal 1st half with a converted penalty kick just before the half.
The Wildcats cruised in from there, with Clayton Setliff recording his first goal of the season for a 5-goal lead with 18 minutes to play. Russellville freshman Avery Flener got 1 back when he headed past Trigg goalkeeper Peyton Phillips with 4 minutes remaining for the final 5-1 score.
Trigg goalkeeper Matthew Smith didn’t make a save over the first 60 minutes, with Peyton Phillips saving 1 of the 2 shots he saw over the final 20 minutes. Jesus Zamarripa made 9 saves for the Panthers.
Trigg County closes out its regular-season schedule with a match at Hopkinsville (10-6-1) on Tuesday.
