The Trigg County volleyball team opened the medal round in the Copper division in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Western Kentucky Smack Down with a win over Muhlenberg County, but dropped the rest of its weekend contests to finish 1-4. The Lady Wildcats wrap up the regular season at 8-22 overall and will begin postseason play on Monday at home against Livingston Central. The 2nd-seeded Lady Wildcats prevailed over the Lady Cardinals twice during the regular season.
The Lady Wildcats failed to take a set during pool play, falling 2-0 to Hopkinsville, Owensboro Catholic and Southwestern. They would claim their first victory of the weekend with a 2-1 result against Muhlenberg County in the semifinal of the Copper division. The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the opening set, going on to win 25-18.
In the second set, Trigg County forced ties at 6-6 and 9-9, but never led on the way to a 18-25 setback. The Lady Mustangs maintained the momentum in the final set, jumping out to 6-1 lead. The Lady Wildcats pulled even at 15-15, but again fell behind at 22-20. From there they scored the final 5 points to take the set and secure the win.
Trigg started slowly in the title game, falling behind 9-20 and dropping the first set 13-25. Ballard Memorial took a 6-1 lead in the second, but the Lady Wildcats battled back to tie it at 12-12. The Lady Bombers took a timeout down 12-16, before surging ahead at 21-20. Ballard needed another timeout down 24-22, but they couldn’t turn the tide and Trigg claimed a 25-23 victory.
The long day on the court seemed to take its toll on the Lady Wildcats in the final set, as they fell behind 7-14. Trigg pulled to within 11-15, but the Lady Bombers quickly pushed the lead to double-digits on the way to a 25-15 win.
