The Murray State volleyball team took home two Ohio Valley Conference honors as junior Rachel Giustino was named Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore Becca Fernandez claimed Defensive Player of the Week. It is the second time in each player’s career they have received the recognition.
Giustino and Fernandez were key to the Racers having a perfect weekend as they did not drop a set to either SIU Edwardsville or Eastern Illinois as they got back to .500 overall at 9-9 and in the OVC at 3-3.
Giustino averaged 5.17 kills per set, tops in the conference, to improve her season average to 4.27, better than half a kill per set better than second best. She also now has double-doubles in six straight matches after registering 17 kills and 14 digs against SIUE and 14 kills and a season-high 17 digs against EIU.
Fernandez led the Racers on defense with 34 digs. She had 20 digs in the victory over SIUE and followed that with a 14 dig performance against EIU. She also racked up seven assists in the two matches and had 27 receptions against just one error for a .964 success rate.
The Racers will look to extend their winning streak this weekend when they travel to Nashville to take on Tennessee State, Friday at 6 p.m. before battling Belmont, Saturday at 2 p.m.
