A balanced bracket awaits fans in the Second Region Boys’ Soccer Tournament that begins Monday at Madisonville High School.
Fifth District champion Trigg County (12-5-1) plays University Heights Academy (12-5-1) Monday in the 7:30 game. The Wildcats lost to UHA 3-2 on Sept. 27 on a goal with five minutes left.
Trigg County last won a region tourney game in 2016, while UHA’s last region win was in 2013. The last time the schools met in the region tourney was in 2011 which saw the Blazers win 5-2 on their way to the region title.
Henderson County (10-6-4), who entered the season as the region favorite and has been the highest ranked region team in the Maher computer rankings, opens play Monday at 5:30 against Hopkins County Central (7-12-1). The Storm are back in the region tourney after a one-year hiatus after advancing to the Seventh District title match.
Hopkins County Central, who hasn’t won a region tourney game in nearly two decades, did not play Henderson County during the regular season.
Defending region champion Hopkinsville (14-6-2) opens play Tuesday at 5:30 against Lyon County (2-17-1). The Tigers have won 21 straight games against Second Region opposition on their way to two consecutive region titles.
Lyon County last played Hopkinsville in the 2015 region tourney opener. Lyon’s last win in the region tourney came in 2006.
Madisonville (13-5-4) plays Webster County (6-7) Tuesday at 7:30.
If Hopkinsville and Madisonville advance to the semifinals as expected, it would feature a matchup featuring the last region team to beat Hopkinsville (in 2015).
The championship will be played Wednesday at 6pm.
