Ryan Roussel scored four goals and added three assists against Lyon County Tuesday.
Hopkinsville began defense of their region soccer title with one thing in mind – winning another one. The Tigers scored the first nine goals of the game and beat Lyon County 11-1 Tuesday in the region tournament quarterfinals at Madisonville.
It was the 13th straight time Hopkinsville has won their first-round game in the region tournament dating back to their last loss in 2002 – to Lyon County. There was no such drama this year as Hopkinsville scored three goals in the first five minutes to erase any chance of a Lyon County upset.
Ryan Roussel, Zach Bryant, and Welby Horn each scored two goals in the first half as the Tigers built an 8-0 lead. Zach Moore and Steven Hermosillo also tallied goals in the first half.
Hayden Woosley scored Hoptown’s ninth goal five minutes into the second half and pulled the Tigers to within a goal of a mercy rule win. However, Trace Adams got loose and scored Lyon County’s only goal with 22 minutes left in the match.
Roussel scored the final two goals for Hopkinsville to end the match with 14:10 left. The Tiger senior finished the contest with four goals and three assists. Moore and Hermosillo also had a pair of assists for Hopkinsville, who picked up their 22nd straight win against region competition.
Lyon County’s season ends with a record of 2-18-1. Hopkinsville improves to 15-6-2 and will play Madisonville in the semifinals Wednesday at 7:30. The Maroons were the last region team to beat Hoptown, which came in the 2015 region semis.
