It has been 20 years since Caldwell County and Edmonson County met in the high school football playoffs. Tiger fans would like nothing better than for what happened following that matchup to repeat itself in 2018. That year, the two teams met in the second round of the playoffs, while this year’s meeting is in the opener.

Take yourself back in time to the fall of 1998. Caldwell County rolled through the regular season with a record of 9-1, with the only loss coming in week two, on the road at Marshall County. The Tigers finished the season with nine wins in a row, including a 21-14 win at Christian County on the final night of the regular season.

The Tigers opened the playoffs at home against Muhlenberg South, and rolled to a 31-16 win. That win set up a regional semifinal game against Edmonson County.

The Wildcats came rolling into Princeton with a 10-1 record, with their only loss having been a district game to Owensboro Catholic. On that Friday night, the Tiger defense was spectacular over the course of the game, holding Edmonson County scoreless, as Caldwell County picked up a 16-0 win.

That Tiger team would go on to beat Hancock County in the regional final, 60-30, the following Friday night. Two weeks later, they took down Bullitt East on the road, 28-13. And then, on the first weekend of December, the Tigers upset highly touted Danville, 38-28 to win the Class 2A state championship.

So, you can forgive Caldwell County fans is they are hoping that the rematch against Edmonson County is a sign of a possible repeat run to something very special, twenty years later.
