Calgary Stampeder defensive lineman Micah Johnson has earned the team’s President’s Ring Award, given to the player who best demonstrates excellence both on and off the field.
Johnson, who won the Kentucky Mr. Football Award at Fort Campbell in 2005, is in his sixth season with the Canadian Football League team and has been named a CFL all-star each of the last three seasons. He led all defensive tackles in 2018 with 14 sacks and added three forced fumbles and an interception.
In his CFL career, the 30-year-old University of Kentucky alum has 41 sacks, six forced fumbles, and two interceptions.
The President’s Ring Award means Johnson is the team’s nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award to be given out later this year.
Johnson and the Stampeders are on a roll. They enter this weekend’s CFL West Division championship game with a 13-5 record and owners of the top seed five of the last six seasons. A win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Sunday will send Johnson and the Stampeders to the Grey Cup for the third straight year and fifth time in seven seasons.
