After consistently being Kentucky’s best player on the court throughout the early portion of the season, freshman Keldon Johnson was finally recognized for his efforts.

On Monday, it was released that Johnson had been awarded SEC Freshman of the Week. It’s his first, as well as the teams’ first, of the season.

Last week, Johnson scored a career-high 27 points on just 15 shot attempts to lead his team in a close win over Tennessee State. He also added 13 points in Kentucky’s win over Winthrop.

For the season, Johnson’s average has climbed to 16.5 PPG and 5.8 rebounds per game. Though he’s shooting just 29% from behind the arc, his overall efficiency from the field has been stellar at 49%.

At a position of which John Calipari is most thin, Johnson’s production has been overshadowed by the recent eruption by sophomore PJ Washington. Johnson’s ability to play both ends of the court as well as handle a star-caliber role in the offense makes life easier on Calipari.

This week, Kentucky quickly gets back to work with a home game against the Monmouth Hawks. Tip-off is set for 8:30 PM EDT and will be aired on SEC Network.
