After dropping its opener to Caldwell County, the Lyon County girls’ basketball team topped Dawson Springs 52-41 Thursday night in Eddyville to even its record at 1-1.  The Lady Panthers also stand at 1-1, with a win over Christian Fellowship in their season-opener.

Rose Smith scored 5 points to lead the Lady Lyons to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, before Erin Orten answered with 5 second-quarter points for the Lady Panthers to cut the lead to 21-16 at the half.  Lyon’s Allison Murphy’s 8 points led all scorers at the break, followed by Dawson Springs’ Orten with 7.

Murphy stayed hot with 6 points in the third quarter and the Lady Lyons had a 35-28 advantage heading into the final 8:00.  However, the Lady Panthers wouldn’t go quietly, with Kaylee Simpson and Brooklyn Clark scoring 7 and 6, respectively, to stay within striking distance.  Enter 8th-grader Cathryn Brown.  After going scoreless in the first half and getting one bucket in the third quarter, Brown exploded for 9 points down the stretch, including knocking down 5 of 6 free throws.  The Lady Lyons took their first double-digit lead at 45-35 with 3:20 to play, before going on to win 52-41.

Murphy posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Calista Collins with 7 points and 11 boards.  Brown finished with 11 and Smith chipped in 8.  Orten had 12 and 8 and Simpson totaled 11 and 5 to pace Dawson Springs.

Up next for Lyon County is a 5th-District opener against Livingston Central in Eddyville.  The teams met three times last season, with the Lady Cardinals claiming two wins by a total of 3 points, before the Lady Lyons got the last laugh with a 19-point victory in the semifinals of the 2nd Region All “A” Classic.
