After a sluggish start to the basketball season, Christian County got some timely defense and knocked off Breckinridge County 46-44 Saturday at the Independence Bank Classic at Owensboro Catholic.

The Lady Colonels lost their opener to Muhlenberg County and struggled for three quarters against Caldwell County Friday before pulling out the win.

“We finally buckled down and played some defense,” Coach Kiki Radford said. “We were active all night and played together. If we can get our offense going a little, we will be fine.”

Aaliyah Hampton led Christian County with 15 points and four rebounds. Kinara Phillips added 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Trinity McGee contributed seven points, six rebounds, and four blocks.

Breckinridge County, a preseason top three pick in the Third Region, dropped to 3-1 with the loss.

Christian County (2-1) will host Madisonville Tuesday.
