Trigg County’s first girls’ basketball game against Christian County in 18 years Monday went about the same as the one in 2000, with the Lady Colonels using their pressure defense to post a big win.
Christian County scored 34 first half points off 27 Trigg turnovers on their way to a 70-37 win over the Lady Wildcats at Wildcat Gym.
Lady Colonel Coach Kiki Radford was wanting to see some more intensity out of her defense after a 10-point loss to Calloway County last week. She got it.
Christian County turned up the pressure in the second quarter, using an 18-0 run to push their advantage to 40-11 with 2:54 left. Trigg County would trim the deficit to 25 points on several occasions early in the second half but wouldn’t get any closer.
Ten Lady Colonels scored in the game, led by 12 points each from Kinara Phillips, Talitha Bryant, and Aaliyah Hampton. Phillips added eight steals and six rebounds, while Hampton had six steals and five boards. Bianna Snorton and Trinity McGee each scored nine points.
DeDe Barbee and Katelyn Slone both scored nine points for Trigg County as their bench outscored Christian County’s 24-16.
No Lady Colonel starter played more than 17 minutes in the contest, similar to the 2000 contest won by Christian County 72-27. The Lady Colonels led that game 53-20 at halftime with then-Coach Donnie Dillard using the second half to work on sets and deliberate offensive plays. His point guard that game was Radford, who had nine steals and eight points for the Lady Colonels.
Christian County (5-3) will play Sacred Heart Wednesday in the Queen of the Bluegrass at Bullitt East High School.
Trigg County (3-8) will travel to St. Mary Thursday.
