
The Caldwell County girls’ basketball team held an early lead over Marshall County, but the Lady Marshals pulled away to cruise to a 76-50 victory on Thursday afternoon in the Marshall County Holiday Classic. The Lady Tigers have a 4-game win streak snapped and now stand at 5-3 overall. Marshall County has won 3-straight to improve to 8-1.
The Lady Tigers held a 6-5 advantage in the first quarter, but a Layne Pea 3-pointer started a 10-2 run for Marshall County and they led 15-8.
Caldwell’s Bella McConnell scored 8 of her 17 points in the second quarter and the Lady Tigers were twice within a point, but Halle Langhi scored 6 and Lorin Powell added 5 to help the Lady Marshals to a 37-27 halftime lead.
Karsyn Parker scored on a layup with 4:30 left in the third to trim the Marshall County lead to 6 at 44-38. However, the Lady Marshals reeled off a 14-5 spurt, capped by a Whitnee Miller jumper to end the quarter.
Jacey Jaggers began the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, but that would be as close at the Lady Tigers could get. The Lady Marshals steadily pulled away, outscoring Caldwell 17-10 over the last 8 minutes for the final 26-point margin.
McConnell was the only Lady Tiger in double figures, followed by Jaggers with 7 and Parker and Lucy Goffinet with 6 each.
Powell and Langhi both scored 14 to lead Marshall, followed by Cayson Carter with 13 and Presley Jezik with 10.
The Lady Tigers will continue participation in the Marshall County Holiday Classic on Friday, facing the 3-4 Graves County Lady Eagles.
