The Hopkinsville girls’ basketball team lost for the second time in three outings with a 52-47 setback to Owensboro Catholic at the Owensboro Invitational Tournament on Thursday. After winning 7 of their first 8 games, the Lady Tigers now stand at 8-3 overall. Owensboro Catholic bounces back from a loss to Dupont Manual to improve to 5-2.
The Lady Aces ran out to an 18-9 first quarter lead behind 10 points from MacKenzie Keelin. Jayla Rose put up 7 points in the second quarter for the Lady Tigers, but O Cath’s Sarah Clemens matched her output, and the Lady Aces led by 10 at the halftime break.
Hopkinsville leading scorer Breon Oldham got going after halftime, scoring 6 points in the third to go along with 7 from Yogianah McKnight. The Lady Tigers held O Cath to only 10 points in the frame, and trimmed the margin to 4 at 40-36.
However, the Hoptown comeback would fall short, as Keelin closed with 9 of her game-high 21 to seal the victory for the Lady Aces. Oldham had 5 over the final 8 minutes, but the Lady Tigers could only get as close as 4.
Oldham finished with 16 to lead the Lady Tigers, followed by McKnight with 14, while both had 5 assists. Rose pulled down 8 rebounds to go with her 9 points, and Donisha Flowers pulled down 10 boards.
